Dolores M. Foster

CENTERVILLE — Dolores M. Foster, 95, of Centerville, passed away on Thursday, Dec. 6, 2012 at the Centerville Nursing and Rehab Center in Centerville.

Dolores was born June 15, 1917 to (Thomas) Britt and Cora (Johnson) Oden on the family farm near Exline. She attended Exline School and after graduation chose to attend the Normal Training Course for one year to begin her teaching career. Her first teaching position was at Eagle School, a one room rural school. After leaving the Eagle school, she continued teaching at the following rural schools: Masters, Timothy Ridge, Pleasant Hill and Clarkdale. While teaching at Moravia and Centerville Schools, Dolores completed her Master’s Degree from Northeast Missouri State University, now known as Truman State University.  At the age of 70, she retired from teaching after a career that spanned more than 50 years. Dolores was a loyal member of both Delta Kappa Gamma and the Retired Teacher’s Association.

Dolores married Clifford Foster in the winter of 1936. They had many wonderful years together. Clifford preceded her in death on March 12, 1964.

She believed strongly in her faith and was a devout Christian throughout her life. Dolores was a member of both the Exline Christian Church and the Grace Tabernacle Baptist Church in Centerville. She was also a devoted member of the Irene Chapter, Mystic Order of the Eastern Star for over 50 years. Dolores worked very hard to keep the chapter open in Mystic. She was a Worthy Matron in the chapter for 25 years.

Dolores was a world traveler and loved gardening. She enjoyed cooking and canning. She loved the outdoors, especially going for long walks. Most importantly, Dolores treasured the time she was able to spend with her family. She loved family gatherings and was fondly known by her family as “Aunt Doe Doe.”

She is survived by her siblings: Kendell (Dorothy) Oden of Exline, Phyllis Mitchell of Brea, Calif., Beverly Baldwin of Mystic, Shirley McAnelly of Centerville and Kay (Don) Hanson of Centerville and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Clifford; brothers, Bob, Wendell, Jack, Britt Jr., John, and Donald Oden; and a sister Dorisdell Germanio.

The Iowegian wants readers to think about the debate Rep. Larry Sheets talks about at the state capital centered on "accepting Medicaid expansion as defined by the Affordable Care Act (Obamacare), or choosing to create an Iowa specific health care program. Those who prefer the Medicaid expansion believe the federal government will fulfill its commitments three years from now. Those opposing explain that the federal government is only capable of that by borrowing the money from the Chinese." So, the question this week is, "Should Iowa accept the federal government's Medicaid expansion or create a health care program specific to the state?"

A. Accept Medicaid expansion.
B. Create health care program.
