CENTERVILLE —
Vernon "Shorty" Burger, 98, of Centerville, died Sunday, Dec. 2, 2012 at his home in Centerville. He was born the son of John Irvin and Minnie Rosetta (Miles) Burger on June 28, 1914 near Udell. He attended the Udell Consolidated Community School.
On Sept. 8, 1936, Shorty was united in marriage to Beulah Powell in Unionville, Iowa. He was a farmer in the Udell area for many years as well as a livestock trucker. He was a member of the Fairview Church of the Brethren near Unionville, Iowa since the age of nine. Shorty and Beulah always opened their home to many friends and family.
After retirement, he enjoyed his livestock and taking Beulah fishing. The joy of his heart was singing. He brought a song to many in the Long Term Care unit at Mercy Medical Center until he was 96.
He was preceded in death by: his parents; wife, Beulah Burger on March 3, 2009; son, David Burger; a brother, Clifford Burger on March 25, 2010; half-brother, Merle L. Burger; half-sister in infancy; and a great grandson, Jacob Hodges.
Shorty is survived by: his sons: Ronald M. and his wife, Ruth Burger of Centerville, Richard D. and his wife, Shelley Burger of Moulton, Dwayne I. and his wife, Sheila Burger of Gladstone, Mo. and Robert L. and his wife, Bernice Burger of Irvington, Ala.; daughters, Ramona M. Hafar of Centerville and Linda Hodges of Columbia, Mo.; an adopted son, Fred Nungesser and his wife, Sybille of Zimmerman, Minn.; a brother, Richard A. Burger and his wife, Ann of Moravia; and a sister, Melba M. Parris of Sandy Hills, Md.; 19 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren and three step-great-grandchildren.
Funeral Services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 6 at the Schmidt Family Funeral Home in Centerville with Ken Martin officiating. Burial will follow at the Fairview Cemetery south of Unionville, Iowa. Visitation will be held Wednesday, Dec. 5 from 1-8 p.m. at the funeral home with the family present from 6-8 p.m. at the funeral home.
Memorials may be made to the Fairview Cemetery Association and can be left at the funeral home.
