Veon Ferren

Veon Ferren, 89, died Tuesday, Feb. 23, 2010 at Mercy Medical Long Term Care Center in Centerville.

She was born the daughter of Charles and Ella (Eaton) Tarbell on July 11, 1920 in Iconium. She graduated from Albia High School in 1937. On Feb. 15, 1942 she was united in marriage to Raymond Ferren in Missouri. Veon taught schools in rural Appanoose County school and later joined her husband at Ferren Insurance Agency for 25 years as an office manager. She was a member of the Drake Avenue Christian Church in Centerville, where she was a Sunday School Teacher, Trustee, Deaconess and also sang in the choir. She also was involved in the PTA, Boys Choir, PEO, BPW, Band Mothers, and the Eastern Star for 50 years. Veon enjoyed quilting, knitting, crocheting, traveling, gardening, and playing Bridge and golfing.

Veon is preceded in death by: Her parents; brothers, Truman Tarbell, Mansel Tarbell, Delbert Tarbell and Ivyl Tarbell; sisters, Truis Turner, Florence Marlin and Doralee Tarbell.

She is survived by: Her husband, Raymond Ferren of Centerville; son, Phil and his wife, Donna Ferren of Ottumwa; brother, Loal Tarbell of Centerville; sisters, Veletta Jolly of Adel and Lorelda Frazier of Albia; grandchildren Matthew and his wife, Katie Ferren, Andrew Ferren, Guinevere Ferren and Dr. Lynn Birchmier and her husband, John Thomas.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, Feb. 27 at 11 a.m. at the Drake Avenue Christian Church in Centerville with Pastor Kenneth Mehrhoff officiating. Burial will follow in the Oakland Cemetery in Centerville. Visitation will be held on Friday, Feb. 26 from 1-7 p.m. with the family present from 5-7 p.m. at the Schmidt Family Funeral Home in Centerville.

A memorial has been established to either Drake Avenue Christian Church or Little Flock Chapel and can be left at or mailed to the funeral home. The Schmidt Family Funeral Home in Centerville is caring for the Ferren family and this time and condolences can be sent to schmidtfamilyfuneralhome.com.
