September will offer many fun fall activities. We started the month off after our three-day weekend with a bowling tournament. Willa Dobbs was the winner out of the 12 playing with a score of 209. High score of the day went to last month’s winner Lorraine Mulcahy with a score of 234. Way to go girls!
Friday, Sept. 7 we were to have ISU Extension and Outreach in doing a canner lid check. This has been canceled by the office. Watch for an update on this event.
Wednesday, Sept. 12 we will have the Appanoose County Public Health nurses in doing blood pressure checks from 10:45-11:15 a.m. Our weekly Caregiver Program will be held at 11:15 a.m. followed by the chicken dinner.
Thursday, Sept. 13 we will have our monthly birthday party with co-op at 5 p.m. Bingo will follow. Bring your favorite covered dish and table service and enjoy the delicious meal and company of your fellow seniors.
Tuesday, Sept. 18 will be the other Wii Bowling tournament for the month. The first heat will start at 10 a.m. followed by one at 10:30 a.m. and another one at 11 a.m. The winners will have the play-off following the meal. The menu for the day is roast turkey and ham, with sliced cheese on a wheat bun, potato salad, tomato salad and diced cantaloupe.
Wednesday, Sept. 19 those at the site will enjoy the program from Chef Charles. Others will enjoy a trip to Tama for an overnight stay. We do have a few seats left on the bus so it is very important to come is as soon as possible. We are able to take only 56 people. The cost for this trip is $50 per person (double occupancy). The trip includes motor coach, lodging, $40 gaming and two $5 food vouchers.
Indian Hills Nursing Program will be in on Sept. 20 to give their program to the seniors at 10:30 a.m. The topic for this time will be “Yearly Flu Shots and Pneumonia Shots.” They will have several fun games and prizes will be awarded to all. The menu for the day will be beef hash brown casserole, spinach, bran muffin, peaches, gelatin with whipped topping and orange juice.
Autumn officially begins Saturday, Sept. 22. We are all decorated and ready for a wonderful season. What better way to start it than with the annual “Fall Senior Forum.” This year’s theme “Retirement…isn’t what it used to be” again will be held at the Honey Creek State Park on Monday, Sept. 24. The day will start at 9 a.m. and last until 3:30 p.m. Lunch will be provided. This is a free event that will include lots of senior topics with several venders in to see the different agencies. There will be transportation available or you may choose to drive yourself, but you must sign up for this event in advance. There will be limited space this year. Come in and get the form.
Tuesday, Sept. 25 will be the first day of a three week Tuesday and Thursday program called “Better Choices/Better Health.” This is a evidenced-based program that helps older adults ages 55 and older manage the symptoms of ongoing health problems, such as arthritis, heart, stroke, lung and diabetes. The workshop series will be held for two hours twice a week at the 18-80 Club. Sessions will be held on Tuesday and Thursday from 12-2 p.m. Sept. 25-Oct. 11. Class contribution is accepted but not required. The workshop includes problem-solving, medication, work with health care system, depression, better breathing, action plans, pain and much more. The site-manger from Wayne County and I will be giving the class. For additional questions call (641) 856-8627 between 6:30 a.m. and 2 p.m.
Mercy Hospital Home Care nurses will be in Wednesday, Sept. 26 talking about senior health issues. This program will start at 11 a.m.
Pancake Day will be on Saturday, Sept. 29. The seniors always look forward to the big event. There will be lots of fun activities. Watch for listings.
Tuesday, Oct. 2 mark your calendar for our fall trip meeting to the Smokey Mountains and Pigeon Forge. This is a very important meeting where the information about the trip will be given out. The meeting will start at 3:30 p.m. If you are unable to attend call as soon as possible. It is very important that we get your papers to you for the trip.
We will also have a three-day trip to Red Wing Oct. 30-31 and Nov. 1. We will head off Tuesday, Oct. 30 and head for Treasure Island, check in and enjoy the days travel, have a buffet dinner which is included and try our luck with the $40 provided in free play. Wednesday, Oct. 31 we will head off to St. Paul where we will tour the city as it was years ago as well as sights of today. Gangsters from Minneapolis used to run the city. We will hear of their evil ways and see the new sights, have lunch as we are out enjoying the day’s activities, then return back to the casino for the evening. Thursday Nov. 1 we will return home. The cost for this 3-day trip is $175 per person (double occupancy). If you have gone to this property in the past and have free rooms or additional free gaming money or food coupons that will be in addition to your package and the free room will be deducted from the total.
It has been a true pleasure to be involved and working with a great group of people for the last several weeks. This is the BOB group. As you know we are trying very hard to raise additional funds to secure the building for the seniors to enjoy. This group asked if they could help us. Before I knew it, they had offered to place new lighting in the dining room and purchase new windows. This group of people have joined forces to see that Centerville becomes a better place for all of us to live. I am very proud to be a part of it.
