Volunteers sought to help with Medicare

CENTERVILLE — Seneca Area Agency on Aging is looking for a few good men or women who are concerned about the seniors with Medicare and Medicare fraud questions. We have exciting volunteer opportunities for you.

Get involved with Senior Medicare Patrol Program. Iowa SMP volunteers work in their local communities to empower Medicare beneficiaries to fight health care fraud and resolve errors in Medicare payments. You will receive training and support from Seneca and the state SMP coordination office. You will be notified of the latest health care fraud.

The state of Iowa created the Senior Health Insurance Information Program in 1990.

SHIIP provides free informational materials as well as one-to-one assistance with Medicare coverage, Medicare supplement insurance, long-term care insurance, Medicare insurance claims and other related issues. If you are a person who enjoys working with people, SHIIP may be the right volunteer opportunity for you.  Counselors receive six days of intensive training and regular support from the Iowa Insurance Division.

For more information about volunteering, call Joan at Seneca Area Agency on Aging at (641) 682-2270 or (800) 642-6522. For family caregiver support, call Joan or e-mail at iafamcg@seneca-aaa.org.

This week the Iowegian wants readers to think about President Barack Obama. Since Barack Obama was elected president, two significant things have occurred: The military repealed the "Dont' Ask, Don't Tell" policy allowing gays and lesbians to openly serve and just recently he publicly said he supports gay marriage. For some, these actions signal a shift away from God, morality and threatens national security. Others say it's about time people in same-sex relationships can wed and openly gay service members do not threaten national security. Now, depending on who you listen to, President Obama is the first "gay" president of the United States. Is that something to worry about? So, the question this week is, "President Barack Obama, the first "gay" president of the United States. Is it cause for concern?"

A. Yes it is.
B. No it is not.
C. Don't care.
D. Not sure.
