January blood drive successful

CENTERVILLE — The Blood Center of Iowa would like to commend the sponsor groups, The Chapter TTT ER, TTT AS, and the Hospital Auxiliary, for their significant contribution to the blood drive as well as the Grace Tabernacle Baptist Church for allowing us to hold the blood drive in their facility Jan. 3. We would also like to express appreciation to all the volunteers and donors who made a valuable contribution to the volunteer blood donor program.

 Mercy Hospital Auxiliary members Barbara Smith and Vivian Huisman registered donors. Working the canteen were Doris LaPaglia, Bev Fike, Patty Albright and Jewell Bryant. Sandwiches were provided by Pat Brown and Bev Fike. Reminding donors of appointments were Pauline Golick, Nancy Kilpatrick and Caroll VanDyne. Publicity was provided by Larry Bettis, Rose Cunningham, Daily Iowegian, KCOG and Community 1st Credit Union. Gary Thomas set up and took down the drive.

This week the Iowegian wants readers to think about President Barack Obama. Since Barack Obama was elected president, two significant things have occurred: The military repealed the "Dont' Ask, Don't Tell" policy allowing gays and lesbians to openly serve and just recently he publicly said he supports gay marriage. For some, these actions signal a shift away from God, morality and threatens national security. Others say it's about time people in same-sex relationships can wed and openly gay service members do not threaten national security. Now, depending on who you listen to, President Obama is the first "gay" president of the United States. Is that something to worry about?
