UNIONVILLE, Ia. —
For several years the Unionville, Iowa Legion Post No. 407 has held a fifth grade flag essay contest. According to Commander Floyd Proctor, out of 32 entrants this year, the winner was Hunter Arbogast, son of Steve and Charlotte Arbogast. He read his essay at the Memorial Day Service in Unionville, Iowa and the following is a copy.
What the Flag Means to Me
By Hunter Arbogast
In my opinion the flag is always showed with respect. It is how I remember those who sacrificed their lived for us. Also my way of showing respect is always going to Memorial Day.
When I see the flag it reminds me ouf our freedom, liberty and justice. It also represents a piece of those who have served to form this country. The flag is very important and you should treat it with respect, also honor. When the national anthem is played you should have your hand on your heart, hats off! This rule is the same with The Pledge of Allegiance. After a military soldier has died to show honor their casket is draped with the flag. When a flag is torn or faded it must be properly burned as a flag burning ceremony. While putting up the flag it must go up briskly and down slowly. After the flag is down it is folded into a triangle with 13 folds. The 13 folds represent the original 13 colonies.
The flag is a way to remember those who have served and sacrificed their lived in the military. Family members, neighbors and friends should all be honored for serving. The 50 stars remind me of soldiers who have fought for our 50 states. The Tomb of Unknown Soldiers and the cemeteries for those who served should be treated with respect.
When I went to Memorial Day I helped support the veterans by holding the flag. When I carried a big flag I saw emotions on faces. There were tears of joy, memories and respect. People were happy for me. It made me feel special and proud. After I had a veteran walk up to me and said that he was very honored for a kid showing that much respect to the United States of America’s flag. In my conclusion, the flag is very important and I will always treasure it with all my honor also my respect.
