Third Centerville concert of season will feature husband and wife duo

CENTERVILLE — The third concert of the current concert season presented by the Centerville Concert Association takes place Saturday, Feb. 11 at the Simon Estes Auditorium starting at 7:30 p.m. and features Bottom Line Duo — husband and wife, Spencer and Traci Hoveskeland — playing a concert of classics and pops on their double bass and cello, blended together with a large portion of humor and fun.

Billed as “social chamber music” or “21st century parlor music,” the Bottom Line Duo — one of three internationally touring bass and cello duo sin history, has been thrilling audiences with their fast fingers, wit and bows. With humor bordering on outright comedy, they deliver a program with roots in chamber music and an amazing repertoire of modern and popular sounds.

A 300-year-old Italian string bass, 1 140-year-old French cello, a Norwegian-American man and a Welsh-Belgian American woman...Add 18 years of marriage and you get a program of tremendous virtuosity, intimacy, entertainment, fun and laughter.

Bottom Line Duo has produced six CDs, a full symphony show, as well as several appearances on NPR. Add to that, performances as the Kennedy Center and two performances at Carnegie Hall.

Expect to hear classic selections of Bach, Mozart and Rimsky-Korsakov as well as pieces such as “Blue Moon,” “Crazy Train,” “A Hard Day’s Night” and “Autumn Leaves.”

Admission is by season membership or $15 at the door. Concert members from Ottumwa, Fairfield and Washington are welcome as part of a reciprocity agreement. Enjoy an evening of live entertainment to celebrate Valentine’s Day.

This week the Iowegian wants readers to think about President Barack Obama. Since Barack Obama was elected president, two significant things have occurred: The military repealed the "Dont' Ask, Don't Tell" policy allowing gays and lesbians to openly serve and just recently he publicly said he supports gay marriage. For some, these actions signal a shift away from God, morality and threatens national security. Others say it's about time people in same-sex relationships can wed and openly gay service members do not threaten national security. Now, depending on who you listen to, President Obama is the first "gay" president of the United States. Is that something to worry about? So, the question this week is, "President Barack Obama, the first "gay" president of the United States. Is it cause for concern?"

A. Yes it is.
B. No it is not.
C. Don't care.
D. Not sure.
