Proposing among the clouds

In a picture-perfect setting, August 4, Jason Wages and Nicole Dixson entered into a venture that left indelible memories in their hearts and minds, as a hot-air balloon, manned by John Bates, floated over Rathbun Lake and vicinity.

The occasion was the proposal by Jason, asking Nicole to become his wife. Jason (and John) had been attempting for one week to literally get off the ground, but the winds simply would not cooperate until this Friday evening, just before sunset.

As the balloon lifted over Hwy 5, vehicles were pausing and pulling to the roadsides to watch this young couple enroute to the Rathbun Lake area. Upon their arrival, a convoy of water crafts was forming and following the balloon’s course.

Once airborne, Jason dropped to his knee at Nicole’s trembling feet. She was hanging on tightly to the gondola’s side rim, as she was very unsure of this experience into the atmosphere-it was their first foray into the open skies. As Jason popped the age-old question, Nicole, tears gleaming in her eyes, gave her reply of acceptance and a new chapter in their lives was opened.

Jason then leaned over the side and, with camera in his hand, asked the boaters to, “smile, she said, ‘yes’”, and the air waves were filled with laughter, shouts, waves, and blasting of boat horns.

What started out to be a birthday surprise for Nicole, according to Jason’s plans, soon developed into much more reason to celebrate.

Jason is the son of LaVerne Wages of Centerville and Nina Wages of Ottumwa. Nicole’s parents are Tom and Brenda Roos of Kansas City, Mo.

A June 5, 2007 wedding date is planned, as this date has became a tradition of the Wages family. Besides, Nicole indicates, she does need time to gather her thoughts after this magnificient proposal and she has to make certain everything is just as perfect on her wedding day.

Bates’s Floating Dreams balloon ride is instrumental, on the way to making Jason and Nicole’s floating earthbound dreams a reality.
