Christensens leaving area

Dr. Mary Christensen was honored at the 39th annual employee awards banquet this spring by Mercy Medical Center, Centerville, for 25 years of service. She came to Centerville after finishing medical school and radiology residency training at the University of Iowa, Iowa City, in July 1984.

While she has provided services at Centerville, she has also worked concurrently at other locations including Greater Community Hospital in Creston, Ringgold County Hospital in Mount Ayr, Decatur County Hospital in Leon and Wayne County Hospital in Corydon and Clarke County Hospital in Osceola, all in Iowa, and Putnam County Hospital in Unionville, Mo., Sullivan County Hospital in Milan and Scotland County Hospital in Memphis, all in Missouri.

Dr. Christensen and her husband, Frank, will be relocating to Albert Lea, Minn. She has accepted a position with Mayo Medical Services there. They are relocating to be nearer their children and grandchildren. Their son, Carl Christensen, is a physician assistant at Mayo in Rochester, Minn. Their daughter, Carrie Christensen Carr, is accepted into the radiology residency program at Mayo, also.

During her years of interpreting x-rays, the radiology departments have expanded to include CT, ultrasound, MRI, nuclear medicine and biopsy procedures. A valuable new development in progress is changing over from x-ray film to PACS (picture archive and communication). Images are read off the computer monitor and can be accessed anywhere there is a computer and Internet. This helps rural hospitals have rapid results from their tests read by specialists who no longer will have to spend hours on the road visiting each hospital site.

Frank has been operating a corn and soybean farm.

“The country has been a wonderful place to live and raise a large family,” said Dr. Christensen.

After their first two children were older, the couple adopted seven children from Viet Nam and Honduras. These were older children with ages ranging from 3 to 8 years.

“Those were lively and fun years,” recalls Dr. Christensen.

She said she will miss her peach orchard she started from seed. Frank said he will miss the deer and turkey hunting. Both will miss their friends and church family here. They are members of the Seventh Day Adventist Church.

Dr. Christensen’s parents are Cora and the late Earl Kaiser of Anita and Frank’s parents are Maxine and the late Dale Christensen of Exira. Their parents were farmers in Cass County where Frank and the doctor got their farming roots.

This week the Iowegian wants readers to think about the recent decision by the Centerville Municipal Waterworks Board of Directors to increase the fee for late payment of water bills. In a story published in Wednesday's Ad Express, board members announced a 10 percent late fee after two days late, a $50 red tag fee for accounts unpaid after seven days late and a $25 shut off fee, water service terminated after two weeks late. The board said the decision to increase the fees associated with late payment is to encourage customers to pay their bills on time. So, the question this week is, "Are these fees too much to ask for?"

A. Yes, they are.
B. No, they are not.
C. I'm not affected so I don't care.
