Teacher hopes to honor veterans

Kelly Dickerson, the daughter of Carl and Cindy Jones and the daughter-in-law of Willis and Faye Dickerson of Unionville, Mo. is working on a project for her fifth grade students in the Centralia Intermediate School.

Dickerson is trying to raise $2,000 so that each of the 110 fifth grade students can make a framed 16x20 inch flag to present to a veteran.

Each flag will go to a specific veteran chosen by the student and the flags will be presented during a Veteran’s Day ceremony at the school on Nov. 11.

The flags will be made of paper, so each student can write a 45-word essay about freedom on their flag. Each flag will also have a photo of the student placed on it.

According to Dickerson the project will use the 1920’s flag, which has only 48 stars because she wanted the students to remember that there weren’t always 50 stars.

Dickerson said the idea for the project came from a school in Putnam County.

This week the Iowegian wants readers to think about the recent decision by the Centerville Municipal Waterworks Board of Directors to increase the fee for late payment of water bills. In a story published in Wednesday's Ad Express, board members announced a 10 percent late fee after two days late, a $50 red tag fee for accounts unpaid after seven days late and a $25 shut off fee, water service terminated after two weeks late. The board said the decision to increase the fees associated with late payment is to encourage customers to pay their bills on time. So, the question this week is, "Are these fees too much to ask for?"

A. Yes, they are.
B. No, they are not.
C. I'm not affected so I don't care.
