Seneca Area Agency on Aging offers local cool sites for seniors

CENTERVILLE — In these days of soaring temperatures, it is important to take precautions to avoid heat related illnesses. Here is a list of common heat-related illnesses and their symptoms.

Sunburn — Redness and sometimes blistering of the skin due to sun exposure.  Severe cases can cause fever and headaches as well.  You can use first aid in mild cases, but in severe cases seek your physician for care.

Heat Cramps — painful spasms that usually occur in the legs or abdomen.  Gently massage area or simply apply firm pressure and sip water slowly.

Heat Exhaustion — Cold and clammy skin, heavy sweating, weakness, fainting and vomiting.  Get out of the sun and if possible into an air-conditioned room.  Apply cool, wet cloths and sip water.  If continues or worsens seek medical help.

Heatstroke — also known as sunstroke. High body temperatures, rapid pulse and possibly unconsciousness. It is extremely important to seek medical care for heatstroke.
