Local photographer Pam Houser was recently honored in Santa Fe N.M. at the UUC Santa Fe Gallery for her extensive works of the homeless and struggling people of America. An opening reception was held on Aug. 3 at the gallery where 20 photos will be on display as the featured artist of the month of August.
Houser’s series, “Someone’s Family,” documents the struggles of people across America focusing primarily on the lifestyle of the homeless. Black and white photos depict the harsh reality of the lives of the less fortunate and their gray concrete lives. While it is easy to pass them by on the street it is important to remember that they are “Someone’s Family.” Through her photographs Houser hopes to bring about awareness and help for the homeless.
When interviewed, Houser explained, “In my recent travels, I felt drawn to photograph people who are homeless, struggling, alone and poor. I was consumed by the way they lived, how they survived. I am driven to tell their stories through my lens.”
In an effort to help the homeless Houser has pledged 50 percent of the sales to the homeless shelters of Santa Fe, and later 50 percent to the homeless shelters wherever the photos are displayed and sold.
Houser grew up in Centerville and began her photo career in the 4-H program. Burelle Browns was her first teacher. She is now a resident of Exline and travels extensively photographing people and the places she visits. A retired teacher of 32 years, Houser is primarily a self-taught photographer but studies extensively the work of many great photographers. She has won awards locally as well as international competitions.
Houser’s other fine art photography will be the feature artist’s work at the Courtyard Gallery and Studio in Bloomfield from Aug. 15-Sept. 15. All of her work may be seen on her website at: www.pamhouserphoto graphy.com.
