CENTERVILLE —
Joyce McConville Kramer and Patty McConville Martin will greet friends and reading/writing enthusiasts during a book event to be held Saturday, March 16, from 10 to 12 noon at Tangleberries, south side of the Centerville Square. They will informally discuss their writing and publishing in today's market, and each will read a brief selection from their books. Books will be available for purchase and autographing.
“The Gingerbread Man Goes to Kindergarten,” based on 35 years' experience teaching four and five year olds, relays Kramer's observations of small children learning to become students and her advocacy for them. The Gingerbread Man, the narrator, interprets the classroom expectations set forth by Miss Rose (Joyce Kramer) and the children's reactions to and interactions with these expectations.
"In other words, this is just the way it is," Kramer explains.
If you are a parent of small children, these stories will tell you what is and what is not acceptable in a typical kindergarten classroom. The classroom stories are revealing as well as humorous.
“Czech Touches” is Pat Martin's sixth book promoting the Czech culture and published by Penfield Books.
"I grew up in Centerville and was fascinated by the language, customs, foods and interests of a variety of ethnic groups there," Martin said.
Focus on the Czech culture was the outcome of that interest. Included in the book: Czech history; kroje (ethnic costumes); major Czech-American museums; folk and fine arts; classic traditional recipes; festivals and cultural pageant competitions; a sampling of Czech-American restaurants.
Martin served eight years as coordinator of the Czech Village in Cedar Rapids and has been promoting the culture since 1981. She is an avid volunteer at the NCSML and former president of the Museum Guild.
