CENTERVILLE — Aug. 20

3:58 p.m.
An accident was reported on Highway S70.  Eric Shawn Ballanger, 36, of Melrose was driving a 2009 Ford and was traveling northbound on Highway S70.  Rebecca Maranda Cossolotto, 19, of Centerville, was driving a 2007 Chevy northbound on Highway S70 behind Ballanger’s vehicle.  Gordon Duane Smith, 50, of Moravia, was driving a 2003 Nissan southbound on Highway S70 when his vehicle crossed the center line into the northbound lane.  Ballanger’s vehicle swerved onto the shoulder and was side-swiped on the driver’s door by Smith’s vehicle.  Smith’s vehicle then deflected off Ballanger’s vehicle and sruck Cossolotto’s vehicle head on in the northbound lane.

Cossolotto was transported to Mercy Medical Center by ambulance with non-incapacitating injuries.  Smith was was listed with non-incapacitating injuries but refused transport to the hospital.  Ballanger was listed as uninjured.

Damage to Ballanger’s vehicle was listed at $3,500.  Damage to Cossolotto’s vehicle was listed at $6,500.  Damage to Smith’s vehicle was listed at $6,000.

Smith was charged with driving on the wrong side of a two-way highway.

Aug. 21

10:12 a.m.
There was a hit and run reported at the 300 block of West State Street or 1100 block of North 18th Street.  The victim reported damage to the right rear quarter panel and bumper to a 2004 Chrysler.  Damage was valued at $1,500.

4:15 p.m. A burglary was reported at the 300 block of East Bank.  The victim reported the residence was entered but nothing was found missing.  A door casing and chain latch valued at $40 was reported damaged.

10:53 p.m. A 17-year-old male juvenile was charged with simple domestic assault at the Centerville Police Department.

This week the Iowegian wants readers to think about the recent decision by the Centerville Municipal Waterworks Board of Directors to increase the fee for late payment of water bills. In a story published in Wednesday's Ad Express, board members announced a 10 percent late fee after two days late, a $50 red tag fee for accounts unpaid after seven days late and a $25 shut off fee, water service terminated after two weeks late. The board said the decision to increase the fees associated with late payment is to encourage customers to pay their bills on time. So, the question this week is, "Are these fees too much to ask for?"
