The Drake Avenue Christian Church invites the community to join us for a Blue Christmas or Longest Night Service on Wednesday, Dec. 21 at 6:30 p.m.
Christmas can be a painful time for some. It may be the first Christmas spent without a loved family member or friend. We may be facing illness, financial difficulties, or other concerns during the holiday season. Each day the news tells us that our world is filled with war and tragedy. The strong emphasis on family and togetherness promoted in the secular world can emphasize the loneliness of those who are separated from loved ones. The anguish of broken relationships, the insecurity of unemployment, the weariness of ill health, the pain of isolation — all of these can make us feel very alone in the midst of all the celebrating and spending.
We need space and time to acknowledge our sadness and concern. We need to acknowledge the true message of Christmas even when we don’t feel joyful. We need to know that we are not alone. The Blue Christmas Service provides an opportunity to do just that. Blue Christmas is not a sad event, but one that acknowledges our true feelings, and reminds us that the baby we remember at Christmas came to a world of poverty, war and sadness.
Following our worship will be a time of fellowship with a Tasting Party; enjoying the treats and tastes of the season. We invite everyone to join in worship and fellowship on the longest night of the year.
