Reds return to gridiron after 2-7 season

CENTERVILLE — The Centerville Big Reds will return to the football fields this fall under the second year of direction from coach Chuck Evans.

Last year, the Big Reds went from an 0-9 season in 2010 to a 2-7 season in 2011. The season was bookended with wins against Albia and Chariton.

The Big Reds picked up a 3-0 victory on a closing seconds field goal to regain the Battle of Highway 5 trophy to begin the season. They beat Chariton 35-21 to end the season.

A total of 13 seniors graduated following last season. However, several players that gained valuable experience last season will return, starting with quarterback Michael Starcevich, who is now a junior.

Other top returning players are Riley Denny (LB/OL), Houston Moore (LB/FB), Logan Brown (TE/DB), David Sheets (OL/DE), Levi Sebolt (WR/DB), Gabe Cowan (RB/DE) and Brent Jackson (K).

Thatcher Carel (WR/LB), Kyle Thomas (WR/DB), Avery Hutton (DL), Grant Walker (RB/LB) and Lewis Braster (OL/DL) outline the list of Evans' top newcomers.

"A number of players returning received valuable playing time last year," Evans said. "Starcevich returning at QB position should provide good leadership for the offense. A number of players return on the defensive unit which will be led by seniors Houston Moore, Riley Denny and Levi Sebolt. The offensive line will have to be rebuilt. The success of the team will be on how soon the offensive line comes together."

Carlisle, Williamsburg and Washington replace Pella, Oskaloosa and Chariton on the schedule this season. The Big Reds will travel to five out of the nine regular season games scheduled, a schedule that equates to over 800 miles on the road to travel back and forth for games.

Centerville will open the season with two non-district rivals, Albia and Davis County. They will travel to Davis County for the "Pennant Game" in week one before hosting Albia in another "Battle of Highway 5" rematch.

Poll

The Daily Iowegian will publish an Editorial Question of the Week on the Opinion page. The Iowegian wants readers to think about the Internal Revenue Service scandal. Dick Polman in an editorial wrote "the IRS' targeting of small-fry conservative groups was not a conspiratorial socialist plot. It was knuckleheaded, ill-supervised bureaucratic ineptitude." So, the question of the week is, "Do you agree or disagree with Polman's analysis of the IRS scandal?"

A. Agree
B. Disagree
C. Not sure
