CENTERVILLE —
A close game with a hot and competitive rival witnessed by a crowd that nearly filled Lakeview Gymnasium to it’s capacity ended in a 12-point victory for the Big Reds. They defeated the Davis County Mustangs 70-58 on Friday night.
“What a game!” Centerville coach Matt Kruzich said. “The atmosphere was awesome!”
The Big Reds ended the first quarter down 14-11, but would bounce back to take a 31-23 lead into the half. Centerville would find themselves ahead 51-45 by the end of the third quarter before taking the 70-58 win and improving to 6-1 against South Central Conference opponents.
Payton Busch was the team’s leading scorer with 19 points after going 7-14 from the field and 2-5 from the free throw line. Busch also chalked up seven assists.
Also scoring in double digits were Mike Starcevich (16 points), Jake Hawkins (15 points) and Logan Dabney (10 points). Dabney had six rebounds and Hawkins was golden from the line, hitting 11-15 free throws.
“We had to battle through foul trouble but I thought we did a lot of good things!” Kruzich said. “Mike and Payton were hitting perimeter shots and our defense was relentless. Four players scoring in double figures shows that we were finding open men and moving the ball well. Good teams persevere in heated games and I thought we adjusted to the pressure and our foul trouble.
“I want to thank our home crowd for such a great showing of support!”
The Big Reds remain in a virtual tie with Eddyville-Blakesburg for the top spot of the South Central Conference standings. Centerville is half a game ahead with a 6-1 SCC record while Eddyville sits at 5-1 after beating Clarke on Friday.
The Big Reds will host Eddyville-Blakesburg on Friday. Centerville traveled to Eddyville before the winter break, losing the close matchup 68-61.
