Centerville’s Tanner Cowan, a junior, scored his 100th career wrestling victory on Saturday at the Ed Wringer Classic. Cowan came into the Ed Wringer Classic with a career record of 97-18. After taking third, Cowan now sits at 101-19.
He started the tournament with a win over Jarret Hopewell (ADM-Adel) by fall in 38-seconds. He would score career win No. 99 against Nathan Macki (Ballard-Huxley) with a 1:01 fall. Fredy Stroker (Bettendorf) would hand Cowan his 19th career loss in the quarterfinals, sending Cowan to the consolation bracket.
Cowan would then score his 100th win in dominating fashion against Jake Kristensen of Des Moines Roosevelt by 19-8 major decision. Cowan would later beat Jonah Eide (Dowling Catholic) by 6-3 decision to take third place at the tournament.
Also placing in the tournament were Brad Irwin and Richard England. Irwin finished sixth at 126 points while England took eighth at 170.
Irwin won his first match against Ft. Madison’s Trenton Johnson by 12-1 major decision. Iowa City West’s Jack Hathaway handed Irwin a loss. Hathaway went on in the tournament to take first at 126 pounds, beating then-undefeated and three-time state title winner Cory Clark of Southeast Polk with a last second takedown. Irwin finished the day 3-3.
England picked up a win in the first round against Hayden DeBlieck of Indianola by 3-0 decision. England would lose against Solbey Vance (Bettendorf) in overtime by a 5-4 decision. England would finish the tournament with a 2-3 record.
Garett Owens went 2-2 in his first meet back from an arm injury that has kept him on the sidelines for the previous portion of the season. Eric Repasz went 2-2, Grant Walker 0-2, Dalton Mosley 0-2 and Kent Hall 0-1.
Centerville will host Ft. Madison and Kirksville, Mo. in their final dual meet of the season on Tuesday. The Daily Iowegian will have live streaming video of the duals starting at 6 p.m. online at www.dailyiowegian.com/live.
Centerville will then travel to Fairfield Saturday for the Southern Iowa Classic.
Then, the post season journey begins as Centerville hosts the Class 2A sectional tournament on Sat., Feb. 4 starting at 12 p.m. Admission to the sectional tournament will be $6. The top-two in each weight class will move on to the district tournament held in PCM, Monroe Sat., Feb. 11. The top-two in each weight class from the district tournament advances to the Iowa High School State Wrestling Tournament held Feb. 16-18 at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines.

Fifteen area athletes qualify for state track meet
There will be several area athletes competing at the 2012 Iowa High School State Track Meet at Drake Stadium in Des Moines this weekend. A total of 15 individual athletes between Moravia, Seymour and Centerville will compete in 13 events.
