Moravia falls in season opener

MORAVIA —

The score was 32-0 at half-time in the favor of the Lamoni Demons. The score didn’t get any prettier in the second half as the Moravia Mohawks opened their season Friday night with a fairly young and inexperienced team, after graduating eight players over the offseason.
Lamoni scored on their opening possession with a 31 yard run by Jacob Williams, and a successful two point conversion also by Williams, to go up 8-0. Williams would record a 66 yard run, paired with a successful two point conversation by Jackson Carr to go up 16-0 in the first quarter.
The Demons would score two more in the second quarter, on a 37 yard run by Daniel Ansong and a five yard run by Cody Swigart to go up 32-0 at halftime.
Moravia finally got on the board in the third quarter to avoid the shutout. Spenser Stufflebeam recorded a five yard run in, but the two point conversion pass attempt failed, to make the score 32-6.
From there Lamoni recorded touchdowns on a 39 yard pass, a fumble recovery and an eight yard pass in the third quarter to go up 54-6. Colton Ranney recorded a seven yard run in the fourth quarter as Lamoni went on to pick up the 60-6 victory.
Moravia recorded just five first downs on the night, while Lamoni picked up 17.
Both sides of the ball struggled for Moravia. They only picked up three positive yards on the day, rushing 41 times for -36 yards and passing for just 39 total yards.
Lamoni, on the other hand, generated a total of 363 yards of offense against the Moravia defense. They rushed 42 times for a total of 378 yards while passing for 85 yards.
“We wanted to see where we were,” Moravia head football coach Denny Whitlow said. “We will really stress the fundamentals of blocking and tackling in practice next week.”
