CENTERVILLE —
Paul Johnson field was full of fans out to support the Centerville Big Reds in their first appearance with an entirely new starting line up.
Twenty-two spots were open at the start of this season, leaving room for some new blood in the Centerville football program.
The Big Reds came out strong and took a 6-0 lead in the first quarter on a touchdown by Zach Lockman, but Albia took control after that and led 21-6 at the half.
Plagued with penalties in the first half, the Big Reds made some adjustments and Big Reds came out strong in the third quarter as Hawkins scored early to give Centerville their second touchdown of the game.
It looked as if the momentum could be changing in favor of the Big Reds, but a fumble at 1:17 in the third gave Albia possession of the football.
Hawkins scored his second touchdown of the night with about seven minutes left to play in the ball game, making the score 21-18 in favor of Albia.
Once again, Centerville looked to have control of the football game, especially after a nice sack from Kyler Risher with five minutes left to play, making it fourth and long for Albia and forcing them to punt.
A few plays and an incomplete pass and Albia had possession once again and scored with 1:30 left in the game, making it 28-18, the final score.
“I’m proud of the way we played,” said head coach Jim Knott of his Big Reds. “We’re awful green.”
Penalties proved to be plentiful for the Big Reds on Friday, but “you have to overcome those things,” commented Knott.
With all new starters, Knott kept the offense simple, with just 4-5 schemes for his players. Though the offense may be less complex than last year, new quarterback Hawkins did a fine job.
“Jakob made good decisions,” Knott said of his quarterback who made several big plays throughout the game.
The Big Reds will look for their first win of the season this week as they travel to Davis County on Friday, Sept. 3 in the Pennant game.
