Centerville prepares for quick re-match against Pella to open districts

CENTERVILLE —

The Centerville Big Reds scored two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning and three more in the sixth to take a 7-5 win against the Pella Dutch Tuesday night in the regular season finale for both sides.
Pella led 2-0 after two innings. Centerville would tie the game in the bottom of the third. The Dutch would spread their lead to 5-2 after a two run fourth and one run fifth. Centerville pulled within one run after a two-run fifth. They would tie the game and bring in two insurance runs in the sixth.
Kolton Gonnerman started the game and threw seven strikeouts while allowing four runs and three hits over his four innings of work. Jose Marin came in for the final three innings to pick up his first win of the season, allowing one run on one hit with five strikeouts.
The Big Reds recorded seven hits in the affair. Richard England led the offensive effort going 2-3 with three RBI.
“Marin, Firkins and England came up big tonight with run scoring hits,” Centerville head coach Bill Huisman said.
The Big Reds recognized the seniors prior to the game. Six total were brought out to home plate with their parents: Zach Lockman, Daniel Cisler, England, Russell Bauer, Tony Armington and Marin.
Tuesday’s game marked the third time the Big Reds have went toe-to-toe with Pella. So far, they’ve come out on top twice, picking up wins of 8-5 and 7-5. Pella beat Centerville 9-8 in June.
Centerville (21-16) opens district play against the Dutch (17-16) in Knoxville at 5 p.m. on Friday.
