Exciting JV opener for Big Reds

With the game knotted at 44 and the clock winding down with five seconds left, freshman, Payton Busch sank a three-pointer as the buzzer sounded to win the game for the JV Big Reds on Friday night when they hosted the Davis County Mustangs in their season opener.

Nick Kruzich dove on the ball as Davis County was rolling it down the court to try to save some time on the clock.

Coach Tom Hill called a timeout with 3.1 seconds left and giving the Reds the ball under the basket.

“It was pretty clear that we didn't control the ball very well throughout the game. We had too many turnovers and really couldn't get much going offensively in the first half. We were a little bit better in the second half, but we really had to work for all that we got,” said Hill.

“I was pretty happy with our defense only giving up 12 points in the first half. We played a lot of man defense which was against our game plan to zone trap a lot. Even though he didn't score a lot, Nick Kruzich was tough on the defensive side of things,” said Hill.

In the second half Centerville built a nice double digit lead to see it taken away due to mistakes on offense.

Davis County went to a 1-3-1 half court zone that Centerville just couldn't figure out.

“We were throwing the ball all over the court and allowed them to get back in the game and take the lead coming down the stretch,” said Hill.

The Mustangs deserve credit. They made some big shots and had played some nice defense in the fourth quarter. They scored almost half their total points in the fourth quarter.

For the Big Reds, David Harshman led the team with 20 points followed by Caleb Baker with 12 and Daniel McDowell with eight. Also scoring were Nick Kruzich with four and Busch with three.

The JV boys will be back in action on Thursday at Eddyville-Blakesburg.

So, the question this week is, “Will it stay or will it go?” The United States Department of Agriculture in Washington, D.C. wants to close three Farm Service Agency offices in southern Iowa, which includes the FSA office in Centerville, and consolidate the operations in order to save money. Tuesday afternoon a meeting was held at Faith United Methodist Church to allow farmers and other producers who use the Centerville FSA office to make comments about the closing to John R. Whitaker, state executive director Iowa FSA. Many questioned if the meeting Tuesday was necessary because the decision had already been made.

A. Yes, because Washington will listen.
B. No, because the decision to close the Appanoose County FSA office has already been made.
