CENTERVILLE —
After placing first in the Iowa open figure in Des Moines two weeks ago, Centerville's Brooke Johnson is now a pro body builder. Johnson is a natural body builder – which means none of the steroids and human growth hormone or other supplements commonly attributed to the sport of body building.
Instead, Johnson competes in the natural side of the sport, which uses nutrition and exercise to sculpt bodies into competitive form.
“Eighty percent of it is nutrition,” Johnson said. “And then 10 percent of it is probably working out and the other 10 percent is probably genetics. Natural [body building] is … me.”
Johnson’s diet consists of a lot of protein with no dairy and no fruit. She is jokingly known as “the egg lady” at the Centerville Hy-Vee as her diet means consuming more than a dozen eggs per day.
Body building is a goal to maintain a healthy lifestyle, Johnson says. In the past, Johnson has also competed in running events, such as the Hy-Vee triathlon, the Dam-to-Dam, the Susan G. Komen 5k race in Ottumwa and the Pancake Day run.
“I want to have a goal,” Johnson said. “That helps me stay on track on eating, helps me stay on track on going to the gym. So, I started with the 5k, went to the dam to dam, to the triathlon, then I decided to do bodybuilding. So that just helps me a lot.”
Johnson won four out of the five events she entered in her last body building competition in Des Moines, finishing second in the other event.
She finished first in her class of the figure portion of the competition, which qualified her for her pro card.
Also at the competition, she took home Mrs. Iowa bodybuilding. She also won the Mr. and Mrs. Natural Iowa Mixed Pairs award with her husband Matt Johnson, who just began competing this year.
Johnson has competed in four competitions since she started bodybuilding. She says she tries to compete in two competitions per year.
“The reason I always do two contests is because I know for the second contest I’m going to be leaner and be better,” Johnson said. “And so, the first one is kind of a practice to work the nerves out because if you feel stressed your muscles don’t flex as well and you retain water more and you just don’t look as good. So it’s kind of to get all of the nerves out of the way for the next show. So I always have the show I really want to do well at to be the second show.”
Her next show is tentatively scheduled for September 2012 in Kansas City, as Johnson looks to take a little time off from competition.
“I think I’m going to take a little time off because I’ve basically been dieting and working out hard for 11 out of the last 15 months, I figured. So, I just need a break,” Johnson said.
Johnson said she is still going to eat “clean,” which means still eating healthy but not sticking to quite as strict of a diet and exercise routine as she does during the competition season.
Johnson also said she is currently looking for sponsorship to pay for food, travel, clothing for the competitions and other fees associated with competing. Individuals and businesses may inquire about sponsorship opportunities by contacting her through her Facebook profile or emailing her at buildbetterbodies@hotmail.com.
Johnson works out at Iron Dreams in Centerville and is also on the Laser Sharp Fitness team out of Kansas City.
